Website Update

UPDATE:
I have finally made the plunge and added frames to my website, along with some various color and graphic corrections. It is my hope that things will be a bit easier to read now. Comments welcome.

Movie, Popcorn, and Extra Cheese

So Sunday night my boyfriend (nullzeit) and I went into San Francisco to a little place called the Dark Room, to see a production that they put on there called "Bad Movie Night". For a mere $5 ticket price you are treated to a bad (really bad) movie and free water and popcorn. (Good popcorn, too!) You can even bring in your own snacks and beer, should you desire. The event is hosted (and by that I mean heckled by) a fine group of spastic folks who not only yell comments at the screen, but they even encourage you to do so as well. It's like Rocky Horror meets... well... any other bad movie. It was awesome. :)

Oh, and in case you're interested, the movie we saw was the 1975 pilot movie for the TV series Wonder Woman. Woo hoo! Let's hear it for bad acting, infectious theme songs, stupid Nazis, plastic airplanes, and golden wonderbras!

Upcoming presentations include Labyrinth (which I actually never thought was bad) and Killer Klowns from Outer Space! (Which I can only imagine is.) Oh, the cheese!

Sleep... perchance to dream...

I got to sleep in this morning and had a rather odd dream.

First off, Daniel was driving me to my mother's house. (No... that's not the strange part. Well... it *is* a bit odd since he doesn't drive, so I guess it's strange, but that part seemed actually normal at the time, rather the way that flying monkeys seem normal in a dream, but anyway...) On the way there I absentmindedly (nothing strange there) gave him directions to my old house in Dublin, where I grew up. When I looked up and realized what street we were on, I couldn't immediately identify the house as it, and it's next door neighbors, had radically changed. To the right, the house was now purple, with a stucco wall around the entire yard. Round columns rose over the top capped with conical tops that were lavender. The whole thing seemed like a suburban fairy tail castle in progress.

When I got out of the car to take a closer look, I saw that the house in which I spent my childhood, it seemed, had been transformed into a Mexican restaurant complete with wooded grounds and an elaborate creek/fountain. I walked up the wooden stairs to see a nice patio dining room filled with a smattering of customers and some wait staff. The hostess seemed to recognize me on sight and said that I was "Jon's mom", whom another staff member also echoed. Even though I had no idea who "Jon" was, I psychically seemed to know that they knew who I was and so I waited for a moment to chat with them and perhaps get a tour so that I could re-live my childhood by looking around and remembering where things were. The staff was rather busy and so I was left to explore some of the areas that didn't have customers on my own, realizing that it had been transformed so utterly that I could not exactly place what had been where. Daniel had been waiting out in the car the whole time, and I felt that he was getting tired of waiting for me, and so I returned telling him that I wouldn't be much longer, to which he smiled that cute smile of his and with genuine happiness and affection he told me to take my time. I was relieved and went back in the hopes to make a formal leave with the staff. This time I walked up what appeared to be a wooden "creek", which is to say a type of fountain that comprised a winding chute that when filled with water from above would act as a type of creek-like fountain. I walked up to the area where I had spoken with the hostess and, seeing that they were too busy to talk, waved a goodbye and then made my way back to the car.

I awoke rather melancholy and nostalgic. The melancholy evaporated rather quickly, but I find myself filled with a desire to go and see that house soon. A lot of memories are there...

My day...

Had a nice day today... (Ooops... I guess I mean yesterday now...) Daniel and I went out for a picnic (how wholesome!) at Contra Loma regional park, near our home. It was nice... sat on a hill underneath a tree in the shade and had sandwiches and just talked about... nothing... It was nice.

Then we ran some errands... later we finished off the Alias Season 3 that we had been addicted to. All in all a nice day...

Tonight my fellow geeks saw the birth of the 10th Doctor in the season finale of the newly revamped BBC hit Doctor Who.



Although I wasn't really ready to let go of Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor, I'm excited to see the series that I loved as a child move on into the future, only this time with good acting, writing, and special effects. Yay team!

Now I just have to wait until Christmas for its return special before the new season starts again in March.

This, of course, contradicts everything President Bush has told us about how he chose war as a last resort, and made that decision because he thought he had solid intelligence about the Iraqi WMD threat.

Bush has refused to even respond to the memo, but after Tony Blair's visit this week the pressure is really building. Representative John Conyers of Michigan is gathering 500,000 signatures and comments from American voters to take directly to President Bush at the White House gates and demand real answers. I arrived home yesterday from my trip to San Diego and I am happy to report that I had a BLAST! I had never been there before and so I really didn’t know what to expect. My sister recently moved down there with her boyfriend and so my mother and I went with the intention of seeing her and perhaps celebrating both her belated birthday as well as Mother’s Day. We arrived Friday morning and were treated to a scenic drive through this most beautiful city. Between the weather, the architecture, and sheer number of things to do, I was amazed. We ate at some wonderful restaurants, and of course went shopping. On Saturday we went to “Old Town” which was a state park that is a string of shops and Mexican food restaurants each with beautiful architecture and ambiance. I say “was” because it has now closed down… after being there for many, many years; their last day was a scant two days after our visit. (Now it is reportedly to be converted into an old Western themed park.) While there, we ate mediocre food (the only time the whole trip that the food wasn’t fabulous) and listened to some incredible live music. (The guitarist was amazing, playing his guitar and an Incan Pan pipe simultaneously.) Later that night we went to Croce’s for drinks (we seem to have drank a lot on this trip! Hmmmm...), a jazz bar/restaurant where we listened to even more live music while enjoying a Bailey’s & coffee… Mmmmm… the taste of true civilization. ;) The next day we went to Mexico for Mother’s Day. My mother and I had never been, and so it was definitely an experience for us. We drove to the border and then walked across, grabbed a cab (another experience) and then had a very scenic drive that alternated between horrifying and beautiful. I was told to expect that I would see “poor areas” but my mind had conjured up images of the homeless in San Francisco, or of the seedier places in Oakland. What I saw was more akin to those images you might see on TV asking us to “save the children”, the only difference being the presence of graffiti… homes falling down, crumbling, burnt out… things so dirty and inhospitable that no one could possibly live there… except for the telltale clothesline that betrayed the fact that someone actually did. It was very sad.  But driving southward along the coast we saw the golden sun shimmering upon the bluest ocean I had ever seen. The day was clear and bright, and the waves lulled up upon the shore with a magical presence. We stopped at a couple of resorts, and had our standard margaritas on the beach, where we alternated between dodging the sombrero-wearing man with a whistle who attempts to force you to drink tequila (he almost got me… tequila running down my chin). When we arrived at our destination, a town called Rosarita, we found a beautiful hotel right on the water, and so we enjoyed a lobster dinner outside on the patio, watching the ocean waves. I was in awe of this ocean scenery… for one, it was so blue! For another, there was not a boat, nor a pier, in sight. Just a massive stretch of ocean and sky that seemed to wrap around the patio and into infinity… it was nothing short of amazing to see. Another cab ride to the border and then we crossed and came home. Another adventure completed. We, of course, made the mandatory trip to Sea World (which was OK), and then to the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park (which was amazing). Entire herds of animals can roam free and they have it all set up so that you can observe their natural behavior. In the lion encampment they have it so that you are able to get right up against them with only a thick piece of glass to separate you. If the pictures turned out then I should have some great photos of the lioness. I’ll post them here if they turn out. I also got an opportunity to meet with Dominic and StarChild over dinner and discussed some things both gay and Feri. It was great to meet them in the flesh and I hope to do it again soon. Add to that some great food (I highly recommend the Kensington Grill), some great wine, some cocktails, and a lot of good conversation, and you pretty much have my whole trip. I’m glad to be home now… I need to rest! Thursday, May 05, 2005 No Nukes! Today I got the following entry in my guestbook (now deleted): Guestbook Entry: Sadly your art reflects no originality. Unfortunately all I see here are graphics you have gathered from sources on the web (i.e. google and yahoo images) and have added bits of clipart and color too, and attempted to pass off as your own creations. Your "Summer King" is a well known picture originally entitled "The Oak King". You should be ashamed. -Artista (5/3/05) No email address was given (of course), but my guestbook stamped it as being posted from 67.168.154.89, which seems to have originated from a Comcast address somewhere near Seattle, WA My response: I was only half upset at reading this today. Everyone is of course entitled to their opinion, but the charge that I have collected other people's work and passed it off as my own is simply false. Interestingly enough they specifically mention "The Summer King", saying that it is someone else's artpiece that I simply re-titled... weird. The model in this piece is a friend of mine (just as ALL of my models are... I have all the original pictures from the photoshoots, copies of their IDs, and signed model releases for each of them). Even the flowers and scenery are either pictures from my own backyard, or from one of my trips. Admittedly, the stag head is a picture I found on the web, but it has been so re-worked as to be completly unrecognizable when compared to its original form. I suppose it is possible that someone else has stolen this piece from me and is now passing it off as "The Oak King" (I've caught three or four people stealing my art before) but I find it tiresome that someone might see this and then fly off the handle and accuse me of artistic plagiarism with no real knowledge to back it up. For the record: The vast majority of the photo components that I use are my own original pieces, and while it is true that I may from time to time use a publicly available image as a part of a larger composition (animals, plants, historical sites and statuary, etc.) I make a concerted effort to change them so that they are unique to the piece that I am creating. Could this be what they are referring to? I certainly do more than just “add bits of clipart and color” to my pieces. So... Artista... if you are out there reading this... calm down and think next time before you accuse someone of wrong doing. Do some research. Make sure you know what you are talking about. Through the magic of BitTorrent I have just aquired the very first episode of the brand new Doctor Who which will premiere in the UK later this month. Apparently it was leaked out onto the internet a few days ago. I always hear about this sort of stuff after the fact, but this is the first time that I've ever taken advantage of it. I'm extra glad for two reasons: There are still no plans to release the show in the U.S. I'm a total Dr. Who nerd. From what I understand it's a "rough" version, meaning that there will be some finishing touches on the final release. But that's fine by me. I'm excited to see it no matter what. Joining Chas and Daniel, my best-friend David, will be coming over later this evening to watch with me. Well… let’s see. Kinda long, so it's behind a cut-tag. I recently celebrated my 34th birthday (on the 4th). The night before I started coming down with a cold, which sucks, ‘cause I had all these delicious plans. Delicious because they mostly involved food and drink. But I didn’t let a little thing like a cold stop me. Oh no! My mom came out to visit me in the afternoon, shortly thereafter followed by my sister and best-friend, David. We went out to lunch at Johnny Carino’s, which if you haven’t gone to one yet, then please stop reading this and do it now. I recommend the Chicken Milano or their homemade lasagna. And desserts? Don’t get me started on their desserts. Mmmm… so tasty. We ate too much and drank a bit (which was an odd experience, considering I was on DayQuil at the time). My sister had a bit of a cold as well, so we were both loopy on a drink and cold medicine. Good times! After eating a bit too much, we decided to make our way home to recover and to wait for Daniel (nullzeit) to get off work because then the real plans would begin. We had late reservations at Schooner’s (home of the best f---ing nachos ever as well as the ever popular Gilroy Garlic Fries™. Oh! And Long Island Iced Teas. Lots of ‘em. Delicious. My sisters boyfriend joined us for the evening too, which was nice, and since it was after Chas’ mom went to bed, he was able to come along too. It’s always nice when your husband can join in for those little things. J I made out like a bandit this year. From Chas (chas_bogan), a beautiful peacock shelf from the Design Toscano catalogue that will now serve as my eastern Blue God altar in my temple room. From Daniel, a great hardcover book of the cartoons of Chas Addams, creator of the Addam’s Family. He also got me a delicious looking dark chocolate and raspberry candy bar. I got some candles and some other candy from my sister, and a booklight from my mom-in-not-law. David got me an Amazon gift certificate, which was promptly spent. My mother went crazy (as usual) and bought me a portable art studio (a 106 piece wooden carrying-case that has oil/watercolor/acrylic paints, brushes, colored pencils, pastels, a wooden palate, a palate knife, and more, along with an adjustable easel built right in to the case). The next day she took me out to breakfast and we stopped by a couple bookstores where she got me a few books I had my eye on. Go mom! J Ryan (darthjarjar) came over on Sunday to spend the night. We had a lot of fun making dinner (soft tacos) and watching the fun yet stupid Chronicles of Riddick. Oh well… cross that one of my NetFlix list. (Which reminds me… anyone else here on NetFlix? Let’s be NetFlix Friends!) J The next morning, I made French Toast, and Daniel nuked some delicious pre-packaged bacon. Chas made mimosas for the mimosa-inclined, and we watched Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Daniel and Ryan worked on their DJ stuff after that and I got some work done Last night I went out with Chas to Death Guild, where we met up with Daniel and Ryan. There was some angst going on when we arrived which kinda started to poison our evening making me withdraw a bit more than usual. Chas kept talking about how much he was craving a cigarette and so, which my dysfunctional encouragement, he went off to buy a pack for us. (Big mistake as I am getting over a cold and today my lungs are paying for it.) While we were in the middle of some of this silly angsty feeling, our old friend Thom (f8) showed up out of the blue. He had missed his bus nearby and decided that we would probably be around. He convinced the doorman to let him in to the club just to retrieve us and we stood outside and chatted for awhile. It was so good to see him and to hear what he is up to. After Thom left to catch his back-up bus, we went inside where I immediately saw the semi-famous Thorn Coyle (yezida). Well, actually she saw me first. We hung out like well-dressed wallflowers for a bit, then she went and danced while I took it all in. (I wasn’t really in the mood to dance, for some reason.) We talked a lot of life, the Feri tradition, her crazy and needed teaching schedule, and my own decision to start a Feri class soon. The music was so loud (it is a dance club, after all) I was starting to get hoarse and so I hope that she and I can find another, quieter venue to sit down and talk in sometime soon. We did make a deal with the Goddess that we would dance to whatever the next song was… to which I reminded her that the Goddess has a sense of humor. The next song came… nothing I knew and nothing I would consider at all “good”. We joined the ranks of the dancing, and did so for about 30 seconds. “We never said how LONG we would dance for,” she said. Indeed! I ended the evening by finding Starr (pulsar_glitch) and giving her the Cadbury Mini-Eggs that she so desires this season. She squealed and wiggled, which was pretty much the reaction that was expected and that I was going for! Here’s for pretty goth-chicks wiggling! J Well that pretty much brings us up to the present day. Hopefully I’ll actually update this thing with some regularity soon. Ha! Sunday, January 23, 2005 What I've been up to... I’ve been pretty busy lately. On the business front, I have been busying myself with the creation of a soon-to-be-released online store at FeriTradition.com which will be populated with all of our various Feri-related art and even some books from other Feries like Victor & Cora Anderson, Anaar, and T. Thorn Coyle. Altar pentacles, Witch-Boards, and meditation mandalas inspired by our Feri spirituality will also be available. I hope to have it up and running sometime next month. (Stay tuned!) Speaking of Feri folks, I’ve been going to Death Guild every week, and got to see and dance with Thorn Coyle (yezida) there a couple weeks ago. (Hiya, hon!) It was a blast and I hope to do it again sometime soon. I meant to introduce her to our new beau Daniel, but I didn’t get a chance to see her before we left. Hopefully next time… The next issue of Witch Eye is coming along rather nicely. (Thank you, elfwreck, for all your hard work!) We got some great submissions and Daniel even designed a new logo for the zine as a present for me. J With a little design tweaking in Photoshop by yours truly we now have an excellent new logo that will be revealed when the new issue comes out sometime in February. That’s all for now… hopefully I will start being able to contribute to my LiveJournal more regularly in the near future!
